Human-Centered Storytelling: A Framework
Most nonprofit organizations tell stories to illustrate the value of their services to internal stakeholders, potential clients/beneficiaries, and funders.
But when nonprofits serve marginalized populations, especially those who have been affected by trauma, the ethical considerations involved in client storytelling can become complicated. Even with the best of intentions, organizations can wind up stigmatizing and exploiting the individuals they serve.
While working at the family mental health center Childhaven, I developed a human-centered communications framework. This resource provides step-by-step recommendations and guidelines for engaging marginalized individuals in storytelling efforts and developing impact narratives that are strength-based and anti-racist.
The framework can be applied outside of the social services world, too. I've trained healthcare professionals, law enforcement agents, academics, and even internal communications specialists how to use it!
I've led Human-Centered Storytelling workshops at conferences and staff development days across the US.
